Maternity Services

Congratulations!

Everyone at Highparks Medical Practice says congratulations!
This page explains what will happen for you and your baby during your pregnancy.

What happens first?

Once the surgery have checked that your pregnancy test is positive and noted the first day of your last period, the information is sent to the midwife, who will care for you during your pregnancy.

The midwife will contact you to arrange your first visit, usually at your home, to talk about your pregnancy.
If you have any worries about your pregnancy, the midwife should be your first person to contact.
You can call her on 01634 830000.

Vitamins

If you are not already taking them, you should take:

  • Folic acid once a day until you are 12 weeks pregnant
  • Vitamin D every day during pregnancy and breast‑feeding

These can be bought at the pharmacy.

During your pregnancy

Your midwife will tell you about:

  • scans
  • appointments
  • where your baby will be born

She will guide you through each step.

After your baby is born

Birth

Your baby should be checked by a doctor in hospital.
If this does not happen before you go home, contact the surgery straight away so a doctor can see your baby.

Your midwife will visit you at home to help and support you.
When the time is right, she will pass your care to the Health Visitor.

Please register your baby with the surgery as soon as possible after birth.

6 weeks

You and your baby will have a 6‑week check with a doctor.
This appointment lasts 30 minutes.

The doctor will check your baby and talk to you about any worries.
Please call at 4 weeks to book this appointment and also book the 8‑week vaccinations.

8, 12 and 16 weeks

Your baby will see the practice nurse for vaccinations at:

  • 8 weeks
  • 12 weeks
  • 16 weeks

Baby vaccination clinics are held twice a week.
The nurse will explain what the injections are for and how they protect your baby. Your baby should not go swimming until after the 12‑week vaccinations.

We hope everything goes well during your pregnancy and we look forward to meeting your baby soon 💙
